- Charlotte is training to be a Quantity Surveyor

Former law student Charlotte Nairn has swapped the barrister’s bar for the building site to pursue her interest in construction.
Charlotte, who now works for Lindum in York, decided to go back to the classroom to train as quantity surveyor.
She is studying for a HNC Level 4 in Construction and the Built Environment at York College at the same time as working full time at Lindum’s office in Elvington.
Charlotte, who is also mum to a young son, spoke about her change of direction ahead of International Women’s Day on Friday, 8th March 2024.
“Having finished a law degree, I spent some time as a criminal law clerk before deciding that career wasn’t for me. I got a job as a Museum Estates Co-ordinator and this is where I first got a taste of the construction industry,” she said.
“I was organising maintenance work, finding contractors to undertake the work, producing purchase orders, and working on delivery programmes.
“I realised I enjoyed this work more than the museum work!”
Charlotte decided to start looking for a role in construction and successfully applied to Lindum as an office administrator. At her 9 month review she asked if there was a chance of progressing into a more hands-on construction role.
She spent some time with Lindum’s estimating team and then our quantity surveying team before deciding that surveying was for her.
“I really enjoy it. I get to work alongside a team of qualified QS and am learning loads every day,” she added.
“I’m involved with our Silsden development, which is our biggest ever housing scheme, and supporting qualified QS Paul Askew at York Racecourse, which is a really well-known local landmark.”
International Women’s Day is a global event which sets out to celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness about discrimination and take action to drive gender parity.
Each year, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and highlights the work that still needs to be done.
In 2024, the campaign theme Inspire Inclusion emphasises the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society.
